Trainers and Facilitators, You Want a Tool To Demonstrate Coaching Conversations…
…To Mid-Level Managers and Other Organizational Leaders
You are standing in front of a roomful of leaders and your pivotal coaching demonstration did not have the intended impact. It’s an embarrassing situation to be in. Maybe, your volunteer is a “joker” and wants attention. The exercise takes way too long. The learning curve or timing of your workshop is knocked off track. You end up having to “wing it” and cut out critical parts of your workshop to be finished on time.
You’re teaching leadership workshops and coaching skills. You know the pitfalls of using volunteers to illustrate coaching techniques. The “wildcard factor” is too risky, and the chances of the workshop going awry are too huge. You cannot afford for the critical demonstration to be a flop or chew up excessive time. If you’re a facilitator and not a coach, perhaps you don’t feel entirely comfortable demonstrating coaching. Any of these situations could be detrimental to the goals of the workshop or your professional reputation.
You’re working on an enterprise-wide leadership training initiative, and you want a coaching tool. You might be the Director of Training or HR, and need a coaching video to use with in-house materials. It’s your job to ensure that the videos are high quality and “certified” by qualified coaches. Participants must clearly learn coaching techniques, and be able to emulate the activities from the demonstrations. You want uniformity across the enterprise.
This DVD Was Designed By Two Seasoned Coach/Facilitators…
…To Solve Those Training Problems For Your Organization
Our DVD clearly, concisely and effectively illustrates leadership coaching. This video was born out of our own facilitation and coaching experiences. We’ve been in those difficult situations. We designed this video for facilitators who face the same challenges. Solve your training problems—simply—by using these videos to demonstrate good examples of leadership coaching conversations.
These Are The Benefits You Can Count On
You’re working on teaching the Coach Approach to your organizational leaders. You want to understand the benefits of anything you are considering buying. Here are the benefits you will receive from these videos.
- Watching these videos changes the energy of the room. Participants “get it” and recognize the power and value of developmental coaching-style conversations. They see how easy it could be for them to manage. They get excited at the possibilities. We’ve seen this happen over and over, so we’re confident you’ll get the same results.
- You get enterprise-wide consistency of messaging. If you are doing multiple programs with many leaders, all your leaders see the same demonstrations. Everyone gets uniform learning with emphasis on the same skills. You know what the leaders are learning in the demonstrations. It takes the guesswork out of illustrating leadership coaching in action.
- The demonstrations are accessible—exactly the kinds of conversations that managers have every day. They are believable and realistic. Leaders come away with a good understanding of how to have a productive conversation in a typical situation. Each video demonstrates different aspects of the coach approach.
- The conversations are under 10 minutes, and illustrate how much a leader can cover in a short time. One of the most common objections to using coaching is, “It takes too much time”. The videos demonstrate that coaching conversations don’t have to be lengthy in order to be effective. Leaders see how it’s possible to actually save time by using coaching techniques.
- The videos clearly demonstrate key coaching concepts in action. Participants see the structure of a coaching conversation, because the steps are clearly labeled onscreen. Each video solidly illustrates proven coaching principles.
- The videos reinforce workshop learning after participants have left the classroom. All of us who do trainings recognize that workshop learning can diminish after the fact. These videos are quick ways for program participants to refresh the skills and enthusiasm they felt in the training room.
- Having the videos creates security for the facilitator by getting rid of “wild card” volunteers. It also opens up presentation opportunities to more facilitators because they do not have to be expert coaches to teach the material.
What’s Contained In These Videos
The DVD contains three videos, each of which demonstrates coaching behavior, as a manager would use it. This is the content:
- The Coaching Mindset (Time—4:12)—clearly demonstrates a leader stepping out of problem-solving mode, and developing problem-solving skills in the other person. Until a manager makes this shift, they are not truly fulfilling their leadership role. They are not using leadership leverage to deliver organizational objectives. This video shows how simple the shift in mindset can actually be in practice. Effective leadership requires shifting from the problem-solving mindset to the mindset of developing problem-solving skills in others.
- The 5-Step Navigational Coaching Model (Time—8:38)—demonstrates a simple and effective structure for the conversation. Using this well-tested model reduces the amount of time leaders spend in moving a conversation towards solution and action. It’s easy to understand, remember and duplicate. The model supports the coach to efficiently manage a coaching conversation—and it puts the work on the coachee where it belongs. By it’s very brevity, it addresses the concern over the time taken to coach.
- Integrating Feedback (Time—10:32)—demonstrates how to offer corrective feedback that is effective and well received. By using the approach demonstrated in this video, leaders minimize resistance and maximize receptivity to the feedback. The video shows how it’s possible to turn an adversarial situation into a developmental (coaching) conversation.
- The feedback video is split into three segments. This structure allows for analysis and discussion at key points. Facilitators have the opportunity to reinforce critical aspects of the process before moving on. The video was designed by facilitators for facilitators.
